FEMA: Its never too late to be late

Early after the storm we heard that each family qualified for $2,000 to help with evacuation costs. We applied. Never heard a word in September. In October we had a computer message from FEMA that we qualified for some relief under FEMA guidelines as we were in a definate disaster area. Then, November. Nothing. December, I get a call. FEMA is coming to talk to me. I , of course, assume that it is about the $2,000, but it is not. FEMA shows up Sunday around noon and tells me that he is an independent contractor hired by FEMA to check out my house and see if it is liveable and whether I need help. Well, it was a special moment. I never applied for house damage relief. He filed out a sheet, gave me a copy that said as much, and left.

I still haven't got the $2,000.

I recently spent time in Waveland, Pass Christian and Bay St. loius and this type of activity is commonplace. We should all be ashamed of the government's (all levels) response to this disaster.

I try to be understanding, after all, I did not pay FEMA (other than taxes) to rescue or take care of me, whereas I did specifically pay my insurance company. I just believe a little organization showing a lot of effective process produces a lot of hope.

Tim....Don't feel like the Lone Stranger, FEMA never helped me either. (nor Red Cross), but my mistake was to work on my house on August 29 and everyday for 3 months before FEMA showed up to see it. After that time, my house was in pretty good shape, so FEMA denied any claim.
